Cattlemen's Education Series Speakers

Session 1:
Dr. Staci Slager
Dr. Slager grew up in rural Christian county. Her family’s farm had a variety of animals from their small cow/calf operation to horses, pygmy goats, poultry, rabbits and lots of cats and dogs. She completed her undergraduate studies in animal science at the University of Illinois College of ACES, and later earned her DVM from the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine in 2007. Dr. Slager has worked in both mixed animal and small animal practices before joining the Illinois Department of Agriculture in August of 2015. Dr. Slager most recently serves as the Bureau Chief of Animal Health and Welfare. She resides in the Springfield area with her husband and two young children as well as her two dogs and four cats.

Session I:
Dr. Susie Hexum
Dr. Hexum earner her DVM from Kansas State University in 1995. She practiced veterinary medicine for several years in Oregon before joining USDA FSIS. In 2008 Dr. Hexum joined USDA APHIS VS and she now serves as the Area Veterinarian in Charge for Illinois. Dr. Hexum has been with USDA for 21 years.

Session II:
Dr. James Mitchell
James Mitchell is an assistant professor and Extension economist in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at the University of Arkansas. James has B.S. and M.S. degrees from Oklahoma State University and a Ph.D. in Agricultural Economics from Kansas State University. Mitchell leads integrated extension and research programs that address issues that span livestock, poultry, and meat supply chains.

Session III:
Jon Strohl
Jon grew up in rural Shelby county on a grain and livestock farm. He attended Lake Land College and obtained his associate degree. Jon has been employed at Farm Credit Illinois for the six years. He started out working strictly in the crop insurance side of the business. In the last two years, Jon has moved into the livestock portion of FCI, and officially became the livestock insurance specialist on December 1, 2023. Jon and his wife, Elissa have a small farm north of Sigel. They have three children, Liam, Griffin, and Ada. Today, they raise mini highland cattle and hay on their farm.
